I really wasn't sure quite what to make of this story at first, and I'm still scratching my head a bit, to be honest. The author has a writing style and sense of humor that take some getting used to. It's an amusing little story that relies for its humor more on the quirky situations that the characters are placed in rather than the foibles of the actual characters themselves.I wasn't overly impressed with the book, but McEwen displayed enough skill with double entendre(including his title) that I revised it up from 3 stars. Worth a read for the laughs, particularly considering the price.

The story is set in the present, but takes the reader back to another time and place. I'm not usually a fan of short stories, but MacEwen's keep me interested to the very end. Witty dialogue and some double entendres that made me laugh out loud. Jake needs to work on his Neanderthal attitude towards women...he's definitely a creature of the 1940s! ;) More Molly please!
Jake Gibb and his employer, the mysterious Prescott Carmichael, go South in this second series installment. When two South Carolina captains of business discover that their affianced offspring no longer wish to seal a dynastic merger with marriage, they call on Prescott Carmichael, problem-solver extraordinaire, to come to the rescue. But he doesn't fly, so he dispatches our narrator, the erstwhile Jake, to get cracking on bringing the former lovebirds back to roost. Can the cocktail-loving Mr. Gibbs effect a reconciliation in a household of teetotallers, miles from his beloved Cincinnati bar? Rife with comic details and witty dialogue, as well as a sly wink to P.G. Wodehouse, you'll love the solution to another knotty problem in Mr. Carmichael's pursuit of total service to clients.
POSITIVES
An unexpected next step in this series. I expected the Carmichael/Gibb duo to be solving another crime. But, that's not the case here (and that was not necessarily disappointing). This installment of the series was a little softer and comedic than the first. This is nice because most short story series writers seem to re-hash the same themes over and over. McEwen doesn't do that here.
NEGATIVES
I have more negatives for this installment than I did for the first. And these "negatives" don't make the story bad, they are simply observations. McEwen does a better job with his women in this story, but not by much. And I'm still begging for Molly to be a more substantial character. McEwen's descriptions of the two island families are a bit shallow. Basically, reducing them to shapes. This seems to cause a disconnect with me. It's hard to care about the future and circumstances of shapes. And Jacob's thoughts on drinking are so heavy, I really think that his blatant alcoholism would have effected his actions and attitude - but it never did.
Once again, McEwen makes a solid run at the short story format. Good work.
