A Cobra Pilot in Vietnam True Tales and Otherwise is a collection of narrative episodes from Ira McComic, an Army AH-1 Cobra helicopter gunship pilot and fire team leader who served with the 235th Aerial Weapons Company (the Delta Devils) in Vietnam.
These firsthand accounts range from the tragically true to ones that reflect a tradition among those aviators whose philosophy is expressed as “Why bother to tell a story unless you can improve it?”
A person who was curious once asked a Cobra pilot what it was like to fly these gunships in Vietnam, and he replied, “I got to fly around, shoot up things, and camp out a lot. What was there not to like?” It was another Cobra pilot who supplied the answer to that question “All the other stuff.”
The reality of being a gunship pilot in Vietnam was contrary to a dime-novel notion of a shoot-em-up aerial gunslinger, and if you're curious about what it was like to fly Cobra helicopter gunships in Vietnam, ride along with A Cobra Pilot in Vietnam True Tales and Otherwise.
A Cobra Pilot in Vietnam True Tales and Otherwise eBook Ira McComic
Since one of the popular magazines ran a cover story on the US Army's new helicopter, circa 1967, this reader has been curious about the AH-1 Cobra.Ira McComic relates everything any curious person would want to know about the Army's attack helo, training, the front seater, the rear seater, the ground crews, weapons load out, pre-flight, flight, limitations, and just about everything else. The author relates that he did not select to become an Army attack helo pilot, but the Army decided that for him.
The book is very readable, understandable and funny in places. The short chapter about the banana tree, which has nothing to do with helos, is worth reading the book just to have a side splitting laugh.
The author does everything but put the reader into the helo for mission ops. A well written book for any historian or person interested to know more about the Army's front line attack helo 1967-1999. The glossary at the end of the book is an excellent and a much needed reference to understand the acronyms used liberally throughout the text.
Highly recommended.

A Cobra Pilot in Vietnam True Tales and Otherwise eBook Ira McComic Reviews
Throughout the book the author tells this collection of short stories with deadpan humor that is truly funny. Self-deprecating and humble the author becomes a very likeable character and it is very easy to get sucked into the story, it all feels very honest, and real. I'm sure some aspects we're emphasized a bit, as he says in the prologue... "Why tell a war story when you can make it better?"
Great book about being a cobra pilot in vietnam. Didn't like how it ended but then again, his tour had ended so there was nothing more to write!
I laughed more reading this book than any book I've read in a long time, Ira has a great sense of humor and gives a great sense of what it must be like to pull power or be a bullet catcher.
Good book read. Was a helicopter mechanic in Viet Nam Cav unit for 19 months. Didn’t have much respect for Warrant Officers or Commisioned Office pilots. Thought they were pricks. But after reading this book see them as pricks with balls of steel. Flying through merciless fire in aluminum helicopters to support and move the ground troops. Have gaine much respect for them. We lost pilots and crew from B troop 7/1 from Vihn Long and Quang Tri ‘70-‘72.
I'd give it 10 stars if I could. It's a story well told and well-written. Ira McComic has the ability to put the reader right there in the cockpit with him; as a fixed-wing pilot, I especially liked his step-by-step description of the reactions and control movements required to perform even the most basic maneuvers in a helicopter - far more complex than I'd have imagined. His wry sense of humor adds a lot to every story and each story is better than the previous one.
I don't always give five stars to a book I enjoyed, but this one deserves all five of them.
I've read one or two of these Vietnam helicopter pilot autobiographies. This one ranks near the top. Ira McComic is an author with great self deprecating humor and writes an excellent descriptive commentary.
More than once I found myself quietly laughing. Other times were more solemn as he describes losing a friend in combat.
It's impossible to learn what it was like by reading a book, but this one gave me a hint.
I can't recommend this book enough.
This as a great book and well written by a good guy in the Army in Vietnam. Though only thing wrong was that flying a Cobra gun ship in the Dela was considerably much safer than fly in the mountainous regions where the gunships had a lot more action and considerably much more difficult flying helicopters. Thanks for the good read and I am thankful you survived your tour.
