Revenge is a dish best served cold.

Edie Kramer has a score to settle with the beautiful people at Blackbriar Academy. Their cruelty drove her to the brink of despair, and four months ago, she couldn't imagine being strong enough to face her senior year. But thanks to a Faustian compact with the enigmatic Kian, she has the power to make the bullies pay. She's not supposed to think about Kian once the deal is done, but devastating pain burns behind his unearthly beauty, and he's impossible to forget.

In one short summer, her entire life changes and she sweeps through Blackbriar, prepped to take the beautiful people down from the inside. A whisper here, a look there, and suddenly . . . bad things are happening. It's a head rush, seeing her tormentors get what they deserve, but things that seem too good to be true usually are, and soon, the pranks and payback turn from delicious to deadly. Edie is alone in a world teeming with secrets and fiends lurking in the shadows. In this murky morass of devil's bargains, she isn't sure who—or what—she can trust. Not even her own mind.

Mortal Danger Chapters 15 eBook Ann Aguirre

Mortal Danger is one of those books that you simply get pulled in by the concept. Revenge story that involves some sort of deal with the Devil? Sign me up. Unfortunately, Mortal Danger is nothing what I signed up for. And the worst part, it could be everything and more that it describes, but in the end, Mortal Danger is a a doughy mess. It's a half baked creation.

Nearly every aspect of this book is under developed. I feel like Aguirre tweaked a very rough, early draft. And when I say tweaked, I mean grammatically edited and left it at that. Their are sections of the book that made me wonder why this was even important (you could have easily done without the science camp and first friends). The "revenge" plot existed for two chapters and then after that it became a "wow my life is getting better wow revenge sounds so mean" plot. The romance was the worst offender of them all: instalove, tragic backstory, stalker, mistrust, zero chemistry--everything people complain about romances in YA now a days can be found here (except for a love triangle, which I'm sure will appear in a sequel).

The thing is, everything could easily be fixed. Even the horrible romance--if a little more time was spent hashing out the story and character developments, then this book would have been a pretty rad urban fantasy.

The biggest problem, which most reviewers have already pointed out, is the message Mortal Danger tells: beauty fixes everything. Once Edie became "beautiful" she gained confidence. She gained friends. She got a boyfriend. That depression that had her suicidal? Gone (this really rubbed me the wrong way. I suffer from depression and if only beauty would fix my crippling self doubt). Heck, she's now fit and totally loves to work out (again, this really bugs me because just because you're thinner doesn't mean your lungs and heart rate or fit or that your muscles are capable of a strenuous cardio workout!!!). Now the very people she wanted to serve a nice steaming hot plate of revenge are forming bonds with her, because now she's pretty and able to get close enough to get to know these people as, well, people.

ARe you kidding me.

There is a lot to complain about--I could keep truckin' along--but there were moments and bits I did appreciate and see great potential. The only reasons I didn't drop this book around 30% of the way. The concept of the Immortal's game. Aguirre borrowed a bit from Gaiman's American Gods: there is a handful of mythical beings from various cultures around the world and it's the power of belief that keeps them going--it's also the strongest of these Immortals that offer Edie her deal. I found it interesting and cool having Edie being haunted and frightened by small time myths used to scare kids. Playing Bloody Mary took on a whole new meaning for her. Also the friendships she formed with the crew she originally planned to deal revenge too--it appreciated what Aguirre was going for, she just failed at the method getting there. That would have been the genuine lesson, but instead it never stood out compare to the blatant "beauty can fix anything and everything" message.

I wanted Mortal Danger to work. I gave it my best, but in the end it's sadly a half baked caked.

Mortal Danger Chapters 15 eBook Ann Aguirre Reviews

This sample was absolutely amazing and I can't wait to get the rest of the books. Totally in love. The characters are so relatable in real life and I feel like I totally understand were Edie is coming from.
Well darn it, now I must read on!! I've been captured by this story, commiserating extensively with the main character, yet feel suspicious of her "saviour." I worry for her, cheer her victories, fret about future decisions. Yep. I'm hooked.
Wish I could get a hold of an advanced reader copy of this book as I am having trouble waiting to see what is going to happen next. Loved the beginning; it really hooked me in. When I got this is was free so if it still is-what are you waiting for? Try it, you will like it.
With the idea that she's going to kill herself Edie heads to a bridge but before she does a mysterious figure shows up and offers her a deal. This mystery man will grant Edie three favors but she must, in turn, do three favors. Who, or possibly what, this mystery man is Edie does not know but the temptation is too great and she accepts the terms. Her first favor, an alteration to her appearance in order to get back at those who tormented her, is granted quickly. How this will change Edie, who this mystery man is (devil? angel?), and the favors he wants are not reveled in the first five chapters of a book that I could not put down. This books release date can't get here soon enough.
I really enjoyed all of the Razorland books so I knew I would love anything Ann Aguirre writes. From the very first page in this book it captures your attention . Of course you want to know what happens next and what was it that made Edie change her mind about ending her life. The idea of some supernatural being coming and changing everything in your world and having the power to change you too would be so amazing ! I also really liked that Edie is a tortured soul being made fun of and picked on ruthlessly at school which made her turn to making the heartbreaking decision about ending her life. I feel that other readers who have been through the same things or are going through them would really connect to this character. I only read the sample 5 chapters so I don't know what happens next but I do know I'm going to go buy the book so I definitely recommend this book!
