After spending 20 years of his life “somewhere amidst the cornfield blanket of a vast Buckeye nowhere," Geoffrey Arthur Drewyor left the modest village of Elmore, Ohio and bounced around the East Coast of the United States for the next half decade. Then in 2005, he found himself in London's Kensington Gardens daydreaming about his former home and began to wonder how different it would look now that he had spent time living in Florida, Boston, New York and the UK. When the time came to decide how he would explore that home, a long, yellow piece of plastic - a WIFFLE Ball bat - offered itself as the guiding force, and the journey was on.
Writing in the vein of rollicking nomadic bestsellers such as "A Walk in the Woods" and "Round Ireland with a Fridge," Drewyor reveals the character of the Midwest while spinning the tires of his grandmother-style bicycle through the country lanes and town centers of his native home. Along the way he manages to avoid fire, flood, and pestilence, but nearly everything else comes into play including a man named Squirrel, a town called Knockemstiff, and a bearded country boy who vents his frustration by urinating on motel doors. By night, the adventures continue as Drewyor sleeps under picnic tables, battles hordes of mosquitoes, and takes refuge in abandoned and undoubtedly haunted farm sheds. But the true test of his journey – and of his young life – is right around the corner, and the wandering Elmoron never sees it coming.
Wiffle Ball Summer will remind anyone who has ever spent a moment in a small town exactly what that experience was about.
It also serves as a warning that when you return there, things might not be exactly how you remember them.

Geoff Drewyor has managed to capture both the atmosphere (and population) of his home town of Elmore in the first chapter. From that point on, with wifflle ball bat strapped to his vintage bicycle, he takes the reader on a tongue-in-cheek adventure through the Ohio countryside - finding wonderful human characters, sites, etc. I especially liked his stop in Knockemstiff - a village he found along the way. I was one of Geoff's high school English teachers, and it is such a hoot to observe him using his writing talents far further than my classroom. This is a really good read.Product details

Geoff does an amazing job spinning a story that will make you laugh and cry, often at the same time. He brings a light and honest retelling of the crazy thoughts and feelings we have. You know, the ones that make no sense in a sane state of mind but we all still think. This book will bring back all your childhood memories and help appreciate home, family and friends; all the things we left behind to grow up and then find out later are the most precious. Amazing summer read!
This a light-hearted and corky fun book! It takes the reader to a place everyone at one time or another whats to do; back to childhood. It pulls us back, and then return to the present in a wonderfully meandering way. This books gives the reader a glimpse into a life they may or may not know. I recommend this book!
Wiffle Ball Summer was a super, fun read. It humbled me and brought me back to fond childhood memories. I enjoyed going on this adventure that Geoff went on. He writes in a way that keeps you with him on his unexpected journey. Geoff keeps you in touch with what is really important in life and let's you realize that goals are still possible even with obstacles. I laughed a lot and even had some tears. This book will certainly entertain you. I recommend it to anyone who likes to laugh out loud when reading -)
The book begins with the author's recounting of an idyllic small-town childhood. It's the sort of thing that's part of the collective conciseness, the images immediately recognizable and somehow familiar. Then the years pass and its easy to question weather things were ever really as we remember. But, of course, that's the thing about childhood- you can never go back...
Geoffrey Drewyor decides this is exactly what he's going to do, that he's going back. On a bike. With a wiffle bat. Setting off on an oddball and largely improvisational trip through his home state of Ohio and playing wiffle-ball with the people he meets.
What follows is part travel memoir and part experimental sociology, the story of the author and his own experience in his travels, but just as much the story of the people he encounters and how they respond to his off-beat quest.
In places the telling may suffer the shortcomings of a new and young author, but anything that it looses in polish it makes up for with its freshness and the truthfulness of its presentation. The author would be the first to question why anyone would ever undertake such a trip, in fact he dose so repeatedly throughout the book, but it is well worth the effort of sharing in the experience.
Worth the read and strongly recommended.
